Let’s take Men’s Mental Health Seriously.

Despite suicide being the biggest killer of men under the age of 50, men are often sidelined when it comes to talking about mental health - it’s time to take it seriously. Movember focuses on men’s mental health and wellbeing, but why is it so important?

  • Shockingly, the suicide rate amongst men is 16.9 deaths per 100,000, making it the biggest killer in men under 50.

  • In 2019, a staggering three quarters of deaths were among men, highlighting the importance of supporting the men in our lives.

We often hear the phrase 'man up', what what does that mean? I think it means to be vulnerable, open, and honest about our struggles and to bravely seek support and help to navigate them. In that case, let's be more man this Movember!

Here’s how you can support the men in your life:

  1. Encourage Open Conversations: Create safe, judgment-free spaces where men feel comfortable expressing their feelings without fear of stigma.

  2. Educate on Mental Health: Share resources and information that normalise mental health challenges and encourage seeking help.

  3. Promote Physical and Social Activities: Encourage participation in activities that build social connections and reduce isolation, like group sports, hobbies, or support groups.

  4. Model Supportive Behavior: Show empathy, listen actively, and check in regularly, demonstrating that it’s okay to seek support.

  5. Provide Access to Professional Help: Share resources for therapy, counseling, or helplines specifically aimed at men’s mental health, making it easier to take the first step.

  6. Challenge Stereotypes: Encourage a shift away from “toughness” stereotypes and support positive, diverse expressions of masculinity.

Each of these actions can help foster an environment where men feel supported in addressing mental health issues.
